If there was a ball and there was a goal, nothing could stop Alan Shearer.

Not defenders, not distance, not great goalkeepers nor even the laws of physics sometimes. That was why he scored a record 260 of them in the Premier League.

The call of home to play for his boyhood club Newcastle United made him a Geordie legend, but meant he lifted the Premier League Trophy just once.

Some are scorers of great goals, some great scorers of goals. Shearer was both. He was the ultimate centre-forward, scoring from all angles, with his left foot, with his right foot and with his head and scoring with pace, power and technique.

“He’s a superb team player and an inspirational captain,” said Bobby Robson, his inspirational manager at Newcastle. “As a player he is up there with the very best.

2021 Hall of Fame nominee: Alan Shearer

All-time top goalscorer proud of achievements after being inducted into PL Hall of Fame

Career Highlights

Premier League Champions

“A great picture. Myself and Chris Sutton at Anfield with the Premier League Trophy. What a day, what a night. We had great team spirit, a great manager, a great coach, owner and so it all came together that day. Having been at the top for so long and Manchester United chasing us down, I can’t tell you the relief it was to get our hands on that Trophy.”

First Day as a Newcastle United player

“I signed for Newcastle United that afternoon. This photo was taken before I went outside the back of the Leazes Terrace and there were thousands of people there waiting for me. When I used to kick a ball against the wall or in my back garden, that’s what I wanted to do - be a footballer for Newcastle. So when that all came true, it was everything I hoped for and more.”

Newcastle United 5-0 Manchester United

“They had stuffed us in the Charity Shield a couple of months earlier, so it was important that we got one back over them. We managed to put five past them with brilliant goals from David Ginola, Les Ferdinand, and Philippe Albert with that incredible chip. I managed to get a little tap-in as well. We sent the Newcastle fans home very happy that evening.”

Becoming Newcastle United's record goal scorer

“What a feeling that was! Jackie Milburn was my dad’s hero and the record had stood for so long. So to get the record that day at the Gallowgate End, where I used to stand as a kid, it was one of those moments where for 15 or 20 minutes the back of my neck was shivering and shaking, my hair was stood up. It was an incredible moment. For me, from Newcastle, to break that record was just incredible.”

Alan Shearer statue

“It’s a bit surreal really, having a statue outside St. James’ Park. I’m very proud, very honoured. It makes me feel very, very special indeed for having that, because after all I got paid to play football, I got paid to score goals, so I was one lucky boy.”
